Interfaith Spiritual Care
Interfaith Spiritual Care is a holistic approach to health that supports an individual’s or group’s spiritual, emotional and existential needs and development through empathetic and trauma-sensitive presence, dialogue and guidance. It opens a space for an individual’s careful exploration of self and existence, supporting the individual to find meaning and purpose, cope with and integrate life’s hardships, and discover and clarify one’s beliefs about the foundational aspects of life. Interfaith Spiritual Care providers (or chaplains) work to respect and address the spiritual and belief-related needs of those they work with without imposing their personal beliefs, while encouraging individuals to trust themselves (prioritizing their personal values and experiential wisdom rather than only large group dogma) and find their meaning for their journey (prioritizing authentic discovery of personal truths rather than only investing one’s faith in another group’s principles solely based on their promises). For more information on Interfaith as a guiding practice and perspective, please check out the Order of Universal Interfaith Declaration of Faith https://ouni.org/declaration-of-faith/.
